So, I wanted to kick off my first post on here with the song that inspired my name (wastedsummers), “I Guess I Wasted My Summer Now,” by John Ralston. However, it’s a protected track, so no go for tumblr uploads.

Since Ralston plays totally low key indie rock, it makes sense that instead of posting that, I’d post an intense electronic cover of Prince and Sinead O’Connor’s “Nothing Compares 2 U,” right? Right?

But jokes aside, this spot-on cover by Shiny Toy Guns is a recent discovery and it’s been in heavy rotation on my little IPod. I’ve never been a big Shiny Toy Guns fan (although I do enjoy Le Disko; yes, the single, go ahead and rag on me) but this cover is kind of brilliant. Shiny Toy Guns preserve (and, in my opinion, heighten) the emotion of the original song, and yet simultaneously put their whole own spin on it. All you really need to know is that it’s off of the Electro Goth Tribute To Prince (linked to the amazon page to prove it actually exists). If that isn’t enough to get you listening, then I don’t think we can be friends anymore.

Before I end this, I would like to quickly back the aforementioned John Ralston song I wanted to post. John Ralston is an amazing musician, and “I Guess I Wasted My Summer Now” is one of my favorite songs. It’s a beautiful and intricate song, and is quite clever lyrically as well. I think my favorite line is “I looked you up in the big phone book/I had butterflies/they had sharpened hooks.” It’s kind of not funny because it’s so true. But it works well, especially with the whole vibe of the song.

In conclusion, Coldplay-style; Viva la weekend…I’m out for now!
